North Yorkshire Heritage Coastline project
Derrick Kershaw Project Management Services (DKPMS) and Transcore Limited of Malton, are currently on site with this community based development. The landmark in sustainable construction on the North Yorkshire Heritage Coastline has been developed by DKPMS through a "Turnkey" appointment and from a demanding brief. Together with our team of consultants we compiled detailed Employer's Requirements and Specifications via Community and Stakeholder consultations. The scheme arrived on site in July through a tendered and Value Engineered proposal which culminated in the appointment of a suitable Contractor. The project has now entered the construction phase and the accompanying picture gives clear evidence of progress to date.
Both the environment of eventual occupants and impact on the unspoiled surroundings were critical considerations in developing a scheme in such close proximity to the Whitby Abbey site. Finished floor levels are set such that the building appears recessed into the ground. This strategy when combined with the incorporation of a planted (green) roof solution helps to reduce any impact on the existing skyline. Sustainable utilisation of excavated earth to form profiled earthworks has also the added benefit of providing weather screening and security to children's external play areas, irrespective of any planned resolution to reduce the impact of a new build in a sensitive development area. Creative solutions to disposal of excavated material have also the added benefit of saving substantial amounts of money that would otherwise be spent on retrograde land filling activities.
The compact 788m2 facility will support and generate such activities as Digital Media research, small business occupation (offices), Coast and Moors Voluntary Action management and administration. Exhibition and Conferencing, formal and informal education and training and a generous space for community based activities for both young and old.
Emphasis has been placed with the provision of facilities for the disabled and families with ample disabled toilet and separate adult assisted and baby change facilities.
Occupants will benefit from enhanced insulatory specifications to counteract sound and heat transmission through the structure, and specification generally in excess of stipulations to comply with the standards enforced by Building Regulations. Ground Source provides both a sustainable and future proof heating source.
Quality, practicality and value in delivery through the construction phase is being achieved via the interactions of both the Transcore Consultancy team and Derrick Kershaw's retained consultancy team working through solutions in Partnership. The entire team has responded admirably to the clients ever developing needs.
