More information on the Green Lane Project:
The £1.5 million new build Green Lane Neighbourhood Centre has become the pivotal hub of the highly deprived Ward of East Whitby. Developed in response to Coast and Moors Voluntary Action (CMVA) objectives, the challenge was simple - to change the quality of the life of residents in a Ward that features in the top 10% most deprived in the country. Residents in East Whitby have traditionally grown up in a culture of low expectations, confidence and achievement. Similarly, CMVA, and the organisations they support, have occupied spaces in existing fragmented buildings that were just not fit for purpose.
CMVA spent five years gathering funding and local government support for the scheme, which was delivered in the true spirit of partnership by the Derrick Kershaw Partnership team of Consultants and Transcore Limited (local contractor). This “fairytale” venture, having only opened in June 2008, is already far exceeding initial expectations in terms of diverse usage. Should these trends continue there is no reason to doubt that the local Community will be rewarded with the lasting benefits this multifunctional asset is now generating.
